High Scardus trail transnational hiking connects the mountain ranges in the borderland of Albania, Macedonia, and Kosovo. Scardus name originates from the Latin name of the Sharri Mountains, the biggest massive in the region; Scardus or colorful mountain. In other words, the colorful is what the High Scardus trail is in terms of landscape, biodiversity, people, tradition, and food.

Furthermore, the multi-country trekking trail in the Balkan Borderlands region, with a total length of 495 km hiking path, covers the cross-border triangle trek between Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia and can be hiked in around 20 days. To sum up, the High Scardus trail passes through six nationals parks, one in Kosovo, two in North Macedonia, and three in Albania; so, one destination, three countries.

Above all, there are several connecting trails and exit points leading to populated areas, allowing for trips of different lengths, durations, and difficulty levels. Thus, the largest section of the trail, like 150 km, is on Albanian territory where it passes through the Sharri National Park so; Korab – Koritnik National Park known as the habitat of brown bears, wolves, foxes, and roe deer.

The High Scardus Trail info

Sharri Mountains have a total area of 1600 km. Around 55% of that area is in North Macedonia, 44% in Kosovo, and 1% in Albania. During this trip, we mostly walk-in Kosovo. Meanwhile, we will cross the border two times. Also, make sure to have your passport in your bag. In addition, you send your copy of the passport when applying.

Meet your guides and traveling companions in Prishtina. We can also provide a transfer from Skopje International Airport. Afternoon is left open for a short walk into the city to get more familiar with the city before we get for dinner together. The guide gives a brief orientation for the coming days.

Morning transfer to Staro Selo, hike up to Mountain Hut Ljuboten

After breakfast, we head off to the village of Staro Selo, the starting point of the trail. The transfer is about 1hr 20min then we start a short and warm up hike to reach Ljuboteni Hut.

From Ljuboteni hut to Brezovica - Overnight in Prevalla

Today's hike is crossing the border from North Macedonia to Kosovo. The trail passes through a high pas and the views are amazing seeing the high peaks of Sharri Mountains. The hike ends up in Brezovica, a very famous ski center and the bigest one in Kosovo. A short drive to Prevalla valley for overnight.

A colorful trek from Prevalla to Lubinje e Eperme

After a good breakfast, we head off to next village. We start hiking gradually up towards Konjusha massive, passing the spring of Lumbardhi i Prizrenit river and the beautiful Konjushka Lake. We spend the night in Lubinje village.

Border crossing from Lubinje e Eperme to Kobilica Hut

Today's hike starts from the guest house nestled within a birch forest along a historic trail. This path, once employed for trade, military endeavors, and shepherding, carries a rich history.

Towards the upper section of the trail, a quaint mountain cabin stands, originally constructed for military purposes. The views of the high summits on the other side are just amazing. We'll spend a night in Kobilica hut, in North Macedonia side.

From Kobilica Hut towards Veshala village

Today’s hike into Sharri National Park is relatively long but certain to be a memorable one. After a few hours of hiking, we reach the prominent Sharr Pass in the Sharr Mountains. Here, an ancient trade path links the main cities of Prizren in Kosovo and Tetovo in North Macedonia. Our next break awaits at the stunning Karanikolla Glacial Lake, situated at an elevation of 2140 meters.

Enjoy the final cross-country trek from Veshala to Brod

We enjoy a hot breakfast before setting out for our next cross-border hike. The trail passes through a high pass and high alpine pasture around 2000m alt. We finish the hike in Brod village, which is one of the bigest Gorani villages in Kosovo.

Hike into Sharri Mountains from Brod to Restelice

Start the day with a delicious breakfast and prepare for another beautiful hike. We start zig-zag hiking from our accommodation towards Zllipotok ridge, another ski resorts in Kosovo.

Along the way we choose one of many flower-filled meadows to enjoy our picnic lunch. Our village for overnight is Restelica, the mostsouth village in Kosovo.

Amazing walk from Restelica to Caj via the path of Colors

The today's cross-border hike is from Restelica to Caja canyon, in Albania side. One of the most amazing trail we hike today is so called The Path of colours passes through a high alpine meadows with beautiful half-wild horses and lots of alpine flowers.

DAY 10
Hike to Radomire, the foot of Mount Korab

Today’s moderate hike to Radomire, the foothill of Korabi summit, offers outstanding views of Fusha e Korabit and its massif. Our trail begins from the village we stay and climb steadily, passing through wildflower meadows and up talus slopes up to 2000m alt. Overnight in Radomire village. All meals included.

DAY 11
Summit to Mt. Korab, the highest peak in Albania

No hike to Sharri Mountains would be complete without climbing Korab, the highest peak in Albania.

Mount Korabi (Albanian: Maja e Korabit, Macedonian: Golem Korab) is a very rugged mountain massif standing at 2764m high between Albania and Macedonia in Balkan Mountains. With 2764m altitude makes the highest peak for the three countries. After the hike up and down, we make our way to Tirana, or back to Prishtina. All depends on your next journey.

The Scardus trip is rated as Moderate Plus and consists of a combination of moderate and more challenging hiking days. Similarly, trip members should be capable of hiking 5-7 hours a day on trails with steep ascents and descents and sometimes tough terrain. For instance, trails are often rocky and daily elevation gains and losses can range from 600 - 1000 m. We hike around 15 km per day during the adventure, much of which falls between 2,000-2,500'm of elevation.


Where is the starting point?

Most importantly to your enjoyment of the trip is your overall fitness level. In addition, we strongly recommend beginning a conditioning regimen at least 2-3 months prior to departure that includes hiking and/or walking in order to best prepare for this trip. However, the itinerary is subject to change due to your interests. You can start the tour from Skopje, from Prishtina, or from Tirana - depending on where you are landing off.
