Leave No Trace on the Peaks of the Balkans Trail
Leave No Trace is essential for protecting the natural beauty of the Peaks of the Balkans trail, which is an international cross-border trail winding through Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro. The trail offers an extraordinary journey through some of Europe’s most unspoiled mountain landscapes. Majestic peaks, lush meadows, and remote villages define the trail, making it a must-hike trail for hikers and nature enthusiasts. However, the increasing popularity of this transnational trek comes with a responsibility: to preserve its pristine beauty. This involves following the principles of Leave No Trace to ensure this beautiful trail is left intact for future generations.
WHAT IS LEAVE NO TRACE?
Leave No Trace is a set of outdoor ethics that promotes responsible recreation to minimize human impact on natural environments. The core idea is simple: take only memories, leave only footprints. The seven principles of Leave No Trace provide a framework for enjoying the outdoors sustainably.
How to apply Leave No Trace on the Peaks of the Balkans Trail?
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
The Peaks of the Balkans trail requires thorough preparation. Research the route, weather conditions, and regulations in each country. Carry a reusable water bottle, maps, and biodegradable soap. Ask for local guides who follow sustainable practices to enhance your experience while supporting the local economy.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites to avoid damaging fragile ecosystems. Wild camping is allowed in most of the areas, but be sure to camp on durable surfaces like gravel or grass, away from water sources, to avoid contamination.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
Pack out all your trash, including food scraps, wrappers, and toilet paper. Use a portable trowel to dig a cathole for human waste at least 60m (200feet) from water sources. Even organic material, like orange peels, do not belong in the wilderness; they may take years to decompose in alpine environments.

4. Leave What You Find
The trail is dotted with cultural and natural treasures, from shepherd huts to wildflowers. Resist the urge to pick flowers or take rocks. Leaving things as they are ensures that the landscape retains its natural and historical integrity.
5. Minimize Campfire Impact
While campfires are a traditional part of outdoor adventures, they can cause lasting damage to ecosystems. Cook on a portable stove, and if you must have a fire, ensure it's in a designated fire ring. Collect only small, dead, and downed wood.
6. Respect Wildlife
The Peaks of the Balkans is home to diverse wildlife, including bears, wolves, and birds of prey. Never approach animals and never feed them. Secure your food to avoid attracting wildlife to campsites, as it disrupts their natural behaviors.

7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors
The trail is a shared space. Keep noise levels low, yield to uphill hikers, and try not to block the path when taking breaks. A smile and greetings with "Përshëndetje", or "Tungjatjeta" can help build friendship on the trail.
Local NGOs and other regional eco-tourism groups, are actively promoting sustainable tourism on the trail. Many hostels and guesthouses encourage hikers to follow Leave No Trace principles and provide guidance on minimizing their impact. Supporting these businesses helps sustain local economies while protecting the environment.
